If you have 24″ monitor or bigger, then you will need some serious firepower inside your PC, look for high-end video cards like Nvidia GTS 250 or ATI 5850, get CrossFire or SLI to be able to crank all settings to HIGHEST.

Most important choices are: CPU and Video Card. These two components have most influence on your gaming experience.

Video Card – be careful there, serious gamers do not look at GeForce 210 or ATI 4650 cards – they are good for low budget, but you will see HUGE performance increase if you get at least ATI 5670 or 9800GT. If you want high resolution then check out more expensive video cards – GTS 250 and ATI 5750 and 5770! For higher end better pick ATI 5850 or 5870, these two will let you set HIGH settings in all games! For most demanding gamers – CrossFire and SLI systems to play like a pro!

CPU Cooler – do not underestimate it!!!!! If you select stock cooler you will get high temperatures, lots of noise and no overclock (Free speed boost). Do you think that spending extra on a good cooler is too much to drop temps about 15′C for more stable operation, not hear any noise and jump-start your CPU to 3.6Ghz instead of stock 2.8Ghz? That is way too much value to not to upgrade CPU cooler. Money you spend here give the most feedback for every 1$.

Power Supply – Very important if you planning on upgrading video card or any other components. If you upgrade video card you should select better power supply to accommodate increased power requirements. For example GT 240 or Radeon 5670 will work with most regular PSUs, but adding second card in SLI or CrossFire will require at least 600W SLI ready PSU. You will not make mistake by getting better power supply, your computer will always benefit from more reliable and consistent power it needs inder heavy loads when you play games!

Memory – important component that goes right after CPU and Cooler and Video Card. Basically, as long as you get at least 4Gb DDR2-800 you are good to go. You will see incremental performance increases if you upgrade to DDR3 memory. Newer DDR3 memory with frequencies from 1333Mhz to 1800Mhz will help on high end machines and will not be a bottleneck. 6Gb RAM is a standard for i7 / X58 systems.

Motherboard – pretty simple, more money you spend here more features you are going to get as well as some speed bump. For example AMD 790x will have FireWire but AMD 770 might not. Intel X58 have 3 PCi-e slots for video cards, but H55 will have only one or 2 PCI-e 16x/8x for videocards. Some motherboards come with integrated video, while others are designed for discrete videocards only.

Hard Drive – most gamers do not need more than 500Gb or 640Gb SATA2 HDD. Some will even be good with just 320Gb. But if you want significant storage – get 750Gb or more. WD Raptor and VelociRaptors have faster spinning speed (10000RPM vs regular 7200RPM) and therefore work 25% or more faster. SSD technology is still in the developments phase and does not offer much benefit over VelociRaptor drives and they tend to be overly expensive.

Fans, Cooling & Fans – Heat is the worst computer’s enemy and all these upgrades help reduce heat by moving air more effectively inside of case and out of it, cooling important components like CPU, Video Card, Motherboard and memory. Cheap upgrades that can make huge difference. Plus better cabling will look cool if you have clear side window!

Case – if you care only about it’s look, then get what ever you like. If you are concerned with cooling capabilities, then select Antec 300, Antec 900, Thermaltake, CM Scout. If you don’t want to hear any noise from your PC check these cases: Antec P180/P183, Antec 300, Cooler Master Centurion, Thermaltake Element. When you spend more on the case you get more features, better quality and better cooling.

Windows 7 – most expected operating system of the past, considering Vista’s poor performance, Windows 7 is everything that everybody wants – fast, reliable, easy to use, compatible with most of the old software and hardware. Windows XP came to “the end of life” along with Vista.

This article is not for hard-core techies seeking more detailed knowledge about the often-arcane word of USB, RS232, RS485 and RS422 converters. Instead, it is geared toward the more casual computer user who may need those interface protocols on the job and wonders what, exactly they are, and how to use them. So, let’s talk about the serial interface in general, why serial connections continue to be important, and why reliable converters are often crucial.

Today, when we connect something to a computer, it likely uses USB, which stands for Universal Serial Bus. Computers from Apple and some other manufacturers may also have an IEEE 1394 “Firewire” interface, though with USB 2.0 so fast, IEEE 1394 is used less often now. We are also used to the various card slots, ranging from the original PC Card format (often combined with ExpressCard connectivity) to slots supporting CF cards, SD cards, the tiny microSD cards and a number of other formats. Most external peripherals — such as hard disks, optical drives, mice, cameras, etc. – connect to computers via one of the above methods. Most, but not all.

While these serial technologies continue to be used in a wide range of computer, automation and other commercial and industrial applications, they are now considered “legacy” interfaces by the computer industry, or at least the consumer side of things. As a result, most modern laptops no longer have a serial connector, and even on desktops they are becoming less common. And even devices that have “legacy support,” i.e. a 9-pin serial connector, generally only provide RS232 connectivity.

This is where protocol converters and adapters come into play. These converters come in various sizes and configurations and convert between RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, and TTL. There may also be a need to convert between the electrical signals generated by computers and fiber optic transmission methods used for high-speed/high bandwidth connections. Often it is just a matter of getting an adapter to convert between your computer’s USB port to whatever serial protocol is needed. Other times conversions is a bit more complex and requires special insulation, gender changers, the ability to manually manipulate signals, or there may be other special considerations. All of this is doable, and there’s a whole industry dedicated to making and selling whatever converter you need for your project.

Speeding Up Vista Boot Time Windows Vista has a lot of great new features and visual enhancements that make it the most feature-rich and pretty version of Windows to date. However, with all the new features and effects, it has a much higher system overhead. If you don’t always have the fastest hardware, this quick guide will help you get the most out of your system by reducing the heavy workload put on it during the boot process.

Working with the BIOS

Every PC has a BIOS (basic input/output system), which is what takes control of your computer the moment that you turn it on. The screen that you first see when you turn on your computer is called the power on self-test, better known as the POST screen. BIOS on each and every PC may be made by different companies or accessed by a different method. The most common way to access the setup screen is to press F2 or the Delete key when you see the POST screen.

Caution: While you are making changes in the system BIOS, make sure you don’t change any other settings. If you accidentally change a value and don’t know what to change it back to, just exit the BIOS setup screen and choose Do Not Save Changes.

Changing the boot order of your drives

Most computers are set up so that when you first turn on your PC, it checks to see whether you want to boot from drives other than your hard drive. The BIOS automatically checks to see if you have a bootable CD in your drive. If you have a floppy drive, it checks to see whether you have a bootable disk in the floppy drive, too. Then, after it has checked all possible locations for a boot disk, the system defaults to your hard drive set in the BIOS and starts booting Windows.

To change the boot order, you have to enter the system BIOS setup screen.

1. Press F2, Delete, or the correct key for your specific system on the POST screen (or the screen that displays the computer manufacturer’s logo) to enter the BIOS setup screen.

2. Look for where it says Boot, and enter the submenu.

3. Navigate to where it states ‘first device’ and cycle through the list to where it states ‘Hard Disk Drive’. If your setup screen does not specifically state ‘first device’ but rather just a list of all the devices, simply select the hard disk and move it to the top of the list.

4. After you have made the changes, exit the system BIOS by pressing the Escape key, and make sure that you select to save your changes upon exit. After you reboot, the new settings will be in effect.

Using the Quick Boot feature of the BIOS

To turn on the Quick Boot feature, do the following:

1. Enter the system BIOS again by pressing F2 or the correct system setup Enter key on the POST screen for your system.

2. After you are in the BIOS setup, locate the text ‘Quick Boot’. Navigate with the arrow keys until the option is highlighted.

3. Use the keys to cycle through the options and Enable the Quick Boot.

4. After you have made the change to the setting, exit the system BIOS by pressing the Escape key. Ensuring you save the changes.

Modifying the Operating System Boot

You can use several different tricks to shave a few more seconds off the boot time. For example, you can reduce Timeout values and slim down the system to get rid of all the extra features and services that you do not use or need. Check out the following ways to do this.

Windows Boot Manager

Likely Page Break If you have more than one operating system installed on your computer, you’ll have to deal with the Windows Boot Manager installed by Vista. By default, the Windows Boot Manager gives you 30 seconds to select an operating system before it reverts to the default operating system. If you use one operating system the majority of the time, you will definitely save a second or two if you set that one as the default and lower the Timeout value to 1 or 2 seconds.

Lowering OS Timeout values

Again, if you have multiple operating systems installed on your computer and the Windows Boot Manager is installed, the default selection timeout is often way too high. It is much better to set a lower timeout so that if you do not make a selection, it quickly reverts to the default OS, making your boot time much faster.

1. Click the Start button, type msconfig in the Search box, and press Enter.

2. When the System Configuration utility loads, click the Boot tab.

3. Locate the Timeout box and replace 30 with a much lower value. I suggest a setting between 2 and 5.

4. After the value has been updated, click OK to exit.

Even though this is a simple tip, it really helps a lot if you have multiple operating systems installed.

Setting the default Operating System

Setting the default operating system is a little more difficult because you need to use the Boot Configuration Editor

1. Click the Start button and navigate through All Programs and Accessories.

2. Locate the Command Prompt shortcut and right-click.

3. Select Run as administrator from the context menu.

4. When the command prompt has loaded, use the bcdedit.exe command. First, you need to get the ID of the operating system that you want to set as the default. To do this, type bcdedit /enum all in the command prompt window. Scroll through the list of different entries and look for the one with the description matching ‘Microsoft Windows’for Windows Vista.

5. After you have found the correct entry, note its identifier.

6. While still at the command prompt, run bcdedit /default. Eg bcdedit /default b2721d73-1db4-4c62-bf78-c548a880142d.

The default operating system on the Window Boot Manager is now set.

Disabling the boot screen

Vista has a new boot screen that looks much better than the previous ones. Disabling it can cut down on your boot time. In tweaking, every second counts.
